What is Content-Based Language Teaching?
At its basic level, content-based language teaching is when someone is motivated to learn a new language because he is interested in building knowledge and understanding in a specific discipline, professional field or job.
In Sheltered models of education, learners are provided with explicit instruction in order to build a L2 vocabulary base and a solid background of content-specific concepts. Immersion models involve presentation of content in L2 usually with the absence of L1 until later grades. Learners are fully "immersed" in additional language learning with the goal of proficiency in bilingualism.
The following video provides an example of teaching grade 7 science to students using the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) model.
