Methods for Teaching Additional Language Learners (ALL) |
Historical foundations for additional language teaching and learning
For centuries, scholars learned about languages one way only-- classical methods, until the late 1880s. During the latter part of the 19th century, Gouin questioned the effectiveness of learning to read and write languages compared with socially interacting with native speakers of a foreign language.
By virtue of observing how young children acquire their first language, he concluded that "language is a means of thinking and representing reality" (Brown). From "thinking", learning in social contexts, and technological advances, SLA methodology continues to evolve, however there is merit in each approach rooted as an underlying foundation for modern language learning.
